There will be stalls at break and lunchtime around the school site, and there will be collection points in the Sixth Form Centre on Friday and we would ask for donations from the Sixth Form as part of our whole school effort.

You are all superstars,

Sutton Trust summer school opportunities

sutton trustAll,

The Sutton Trust is an excellent oganisation, which has helped many Little Heath students move to university. I have just received the following from them.

You may not be aware that The University of Nottingham runs one of the country’s most prestigious residential programmes – the Sutton Trust Summer Schools! This scheme gives high achieving students from WP backgrounds the chance to experience life as a first year undergraduate at a top university.

Applications are now open for the 2014 summer schools, and we’d really like to receive applications from your year 12 students. The programme is completely FREE of charge, with all accommodation, food, activities and travel costs covered. Students who attend at Nottingham receive additional admissions and revision support throughout year 13 as well. Plus, those students who attend a Nottingham Summer School and subsequently enrol at the University of Nottingham as undergraduates will automatically receive the Nottingham Potential Bursary – £1000 per year for each year of undergraduate study!!

We would particularly encourage applications for the following subject streams which tend to receive fewer applications, and are therefore easier to gain a place on:

  • Geography
  • Historical Studies
  • Life Sciences (Biology and Biomedical Sciences)
  • Physical Sciences (Chemistry, Physics and Astronomy)
  • Psychology and Philosophy
  • Language and Cultural Studies (no language experience required)
  • Sociology, Theology and Ethics

If you want to know more about the summer schools and their entry requirements then click on www.suttontrust.com – most importantly, the deadline for applications (which must be done through the website) is 10th March. I will put a copy of the brochure on the pin board outside my office.

Pre-med course at the Royal Berkshire Hospital

medicalsymbolIf you are thinking of an application to read medicine, then you really do need to attend a pre-med course. There are a couple of schools of medicine which do not require them, but these are very much the exception rather than the norm. They also are key to getting work experience.

The pre-med scheme at the Royal Berkshire hospital is described below. If you have any questions about this, then please do come and see either myself, Mr Hand or Ms Vignali.

The Royal Berkshire Hospital has for a long time provided opportunities for sixth formers to visit the hospital and get an idea of whether or not they wish to pursue a career in medicine.

Having run a very successful course over the past three years, we are again running a pre-UCAS course on Wednesday 16th July 2014, which will give potential applicants a flavour of medicine as a career, advice regarding their university medical school applications, including sessions on writing successful personal statements and interview technique and an opportunity to hear from both junior and senior doctors about what it is like to work in their various specialties. There will be presentations from both pre-clinical and clinical medical students. It will also allow us to complete the necessary legal and health formalities which are a requirement for their subsequent clinical experience in the hospital.

The course will be open to year 11 and 12 but preference will be given to those in year 12. Applicants will only be considered with a suitable reference provided by either the head teacher, or head of sixth form. In addition we require a list of GCSE grades or predicted grades. Places on the course are highly sought after and only those with a genuine interest in a career in medicine will be considered. Please note that this course is not suitable for students wishing to study nursing, midwifery or other allied health professions.

At the end of the course students will be given a Certificate of Attendance and a list of consultants in the hospital that they can approach to arrange more informal clinical visits as they wish and as their individual time allows. We hope this combination of a teaching day and informal visits will be the best way to maximize the opportunity for them.

We will be making a £60 charge to cover the administrative and catering costs. We hope that this will not put off any serious applicant, but if you are aware of financial circumstances in a family where this may prove difficult or discourage an individual, perhaps you would be kind enough to let us know at the time of your supporting letter.

It may be that demand will probably out strip our ability to supply the perfect experience for everyone and we will be offering places on a first come first served basis, however we do follow a strict criteria for entrance. Because of the necessary safety checks, we will not be allowing ad hoc clinical visits from those who have not been able to get a Certificate of Attendance.

Mr Kydd.

Year Twelve briefing notes – for the week starting Monday 3rd March

number12All,

A few points for this week please.

1. No assembly this week as Year Ten mocks are finishing off. Next week you will have a full formal assembly wit hMs Vignali.

2. Obviously you must now be averaging at least three hours a day outside the classroom. Please use the remaining 8 school weeks as professionally as possible. This means that in a calm way you are focused upon the following;

  • Ensuring that all coursework is at least a grade above your target grade.
  • Ensuring that you have organised and complete notes, and the you understand where your weaknesses are (use your PLPs).
  • Ensuring that you really understand how your exams will be assessed.
  • Ensuring that you attend all offered revision. An hour with a teacher is of course worth two or three of independent study.

3. If you suffer with examination stress can you please make sure that your mentor knows. There is plenty that we can do to help you, but only if we know.

4. Please have a look at the excellent careers posts below.  I have also pinned information about a careers fayre in July at Newbury Rugby club outside my office. It is orgainsed by the Education and Businees partnership for Berkshire. You might like to look at their website – http://www.ebpwb.co.uk/.

Work hard please.

Mr Kydd.
