Business – something a bit lighter ?

david_points_1024This BBC newswebsite magazine page shows that many businesses are looking to make their office more fun and creative to inspire their employees to create a new innovative product or solve problems.

This article also demonstrates how hard businesss are working to ensure their employees remain motivated whilst at work and enjoy their work.  Gone have the days where employees turn up to work, sit at their desk and talk to no one!  Businesses now want employees to talk to each other and socialise together as they feel this makes a more productive work place!  Now get off the internet and talk to your peers!

Geography enrichment – something to watch

ox bow lakeA couple of things you might like to watch to enrich your A Level studies.

Physical Geography

This link will take you to the Channel Four catch up page for their recent programmes Britain’s Killer Storms. This is “a powerful and moving feature-length drama-documentary telling the story of five major storms that battered the UK throughout 2012. Told by the people who survived them, it combines archive footage with dramatic reconstruction and satellite images, to piece together the life of the storms, how they were formed, what made them unique and the impact they had on our islands.

Human Geography

This link will take you to the Panorama programme – The Romanians are coming ? This is of interest particularly to Year Twelev students studying population change, and Year Thirteen students for their work on world cities.

The cartoon that came in from the Cold

Animal FarmYear Thirteen historians,

You may remember in the last week of the summer term we watched the 1955 cartoon version of  Animal Farm as part of your introduction to the Russian dicatorships course. What I did not realise at the time was that although a British film, it was paid for by the CIA. This article by Karl Cohen in The Guardian explains the remarkable story of how US intelligence secretly funded the landmark British movie. Animated propaganda was not of course new (it had been widely used in the Second World War), but what makes this noteworthy for me is that this was a huge box office success and critically acclaimed.

This certains helps to explain the diversion from the Orwell book. In terms of the chronology of our course, we should refelct that it would have been made when Stalin was still alive, when the Korean War was still raging, and before Khrushchev started to speak of peaceful co-existance.

Maybe it is worth rewatching it with this information in your head.

Year Twelve – Briefing notes for the week beginning Monday 16th December

number12A few matters for the week please,

1. First can I remind you of the importance of finishing the term with as much energy as possible. Most of you will have a series of mock examinations when you return, and we expect you to face these as well prepared as possible. You should now have you personalised timetable, and if you need another copy of the guidance or the blank revision timetable please click the hyperlinks. Make sure that by Friday you know what you need to revise, and have complete notes.

2. Those of you with fewer mock examinations because you are undertaking applied A levels must take this chance to ensure not only that you are upto date, but that your coursework is at least at a grade B. Again make sure that by Friday you know what you need to do to improve your work.

3. A message from Mr Linz – We are inviting students to wear a Christmas jumper to spread some seasonal cheer. We are asking for a contribution of £1 for this to raise valuable funds for Abbey Touraid. This will help give the opportunity for  a group of underprivileged children in Africa to come to Reading for a rugby tour. It is our collective way of “giving to others this Christmastime” and we would love Sixth Formers to take part. We’ll put a collection bucket in Sixth Form Reception.

Finally from me. Well done on an excellent start to your A Levels. I trust that you will have a peaceful Christmas.
