Welcome back Year 13.

number 13If you are reading this, well done – you have found and are using the school website.  The ’13’ symbol which you see is the instantly recognisable indication that this is a Year 13 information post.  look out for them when you check the site.

On Wednesday 4th September, you should be in school for 8.50am latest to find out where your mentor will be.  You will then be with them for an hour getting your timetable and doing admin stuff.  Lessons will commence as normal from period 2.  We’ll have an assembly at 1.20.  You must be there.

Personal statements: Oxbridge

17035_trinityjcrUniversity College Oxford produced a useful guide to help construct your personal statement: Final printout for personal statements It has an Oxbridge ‘slant’ to it but is equally useful for any application to any institution.  You should try to come back with a first draft of your statement after the summer and give it to Mr Hand as soon as possible for feedback.

Gothic Film Season

mummy-1959-001-poster[1]If you are doing English literature A2, you have got to have a look at Gothic: The Dark Heart of Film, a season of films, TV and radio broadcasts organised by the British Film Institute.  It looks brilliant.  Listen to the launch clip and read what some of the panel of guests said about the Gothic genre:  Charlie Higson nails it when he says: “I love the idea of decent, upstanding citizens stripping away layers of mystery to discover the craziness and horror at the heart of things.”  The director of the BFI Heather Stewart also gave this great insight: “Gothic will celebrate the very British genius – rooted in literature and art – that gave rise to some of the most filmed characters in our on-screen history: Dracula, Frankenstein and Jekyll & Hyde. Gothic introduced the nation to sex, unleashing dark passions and breaking taboos along the way”
