Elevate Me – careers advice in Reading

city-thumbnailElevate Me is the place for 16-24 year olds in Reading to get help, advice and support on employment, work experience, volunteering and mentoring.  It is an all-encompassing site bringing together support and advice from many of the agencies operating in Reading and the surrounding area.

http://www.elevateme.org.uk/

The website has a ‘city’ that is populated by a number of Reading buildings, each building covering a particular topic, with floors that go into more detail.

By Spring 2015 a number of the agencies (Adviza, New Directions, Reading Voluntary Action and members of JobCentre Plus) will be housed on the 3rd floor of Reading’s Central Library, our learning hub.  This will give any young person visiting the hub a huge array of agencies that will be able to help them all under one roof.

Student Questionnaire on Note Taking

As part of the schools teaching and learning week we are analysing how students take notes in lessons and how you organise them.  The questionnaire will allow us to gain an understanding of the different ways students collect notes and this will help us inform staff and other students of the most effective ways of note taking.

Please complete the online survey below.  It is six multiple choice questions and should take no longer than 2 minutes. The questionnaire will remain online until Tuesday 18th November.

Thanking you for your feedback in advance.

Week of 10th November

ucasYear 12 have Safe Drive on Monday, so no assembly.  Year 13, you have an assembly on Tuesday in the main hall about the Rwanda Fund raising day.  See last week’s post for a link to the recent controversial documentary.

Year 13, you should now have completed, or be completing your UCAS applications.  Please see your mentors before you submit your application for approval because I am spotting lots of errors – including not putting in your current A2 subjects which means we can’t give you predicted grades!

Once you think your application is ready, submit it using pay/send and tell your mentor it is ready for their reference.  If you don’t see them, they can’t do a very good reference…you will just get the best we can do given you haven’t made the effort to organise one of the most important applications you will make.  I then double check it and if it is ok, I will send it off.  If it needs more work, it will be sent back and you will get a text telling you to log on and correct it.  If you’re not sure ASK.  It saves time for everyone.

I am happy to look at personal statements, but I am getting loads at the moment, so always use your mentor first.  They know what they are doing and I can’t guarantee that I will give it as much time it warrants given I have so many to look at.

Finally, get it done soon.  There is NO guarantee that mentors will add references over Christmas, so don’t take it for granted that if you do it on the 19th December your mentors will immediately be able/willing to add refs during the holidays.

w/b 4.11

littleheathNo assemblies this week, but we will be having one for Year 13 next week on our Rwanda charity.  There was a recent documentary about the events of 20 years ago on BBC2 which has caused lots of controversy.  Have a look for yourself here.

UCAS internal deadline is Friday.  Please make sure you see your mentor so that they know your reference needs doing.
