Numeric Computing

computerA couple of useful sites for A Level computer students,

Please click here to read the transcript of William Kahan discussing the current state of numeric computing. Click here for N.M.Maclaren’s paper discussing how computers handle numbers.

Both should be valuable enrichment exercises.

Drama Enrichment

dramaWhat’s on – November and December

Get your fix of theatre before Christmas …

The Light Princess

The National Theatre, London: Now – 9th January

http://www.nationaltheatre.org.uk/shows/the-light-princess?dates=all#tabpos

I have to admit I wouldn’t usually recommend musicals but this new musical looks spectacular. A national theatre production, a classic fairytale storyline, stunning visuals and music by Tori Amos … sounds good to me.

nut, Debbie Tucker Green

The Shed at The National Theatre, London: 30th October – 5th December

http://www.nationaltheatre.org.uk/shows/nut

A new play by an up and coming playwright writing about contemporary issues … plus The Shed is such an exciting space.

Beats

South Street, Reading: Wednesday 20th November

http://www.readingarts.com/southstreet/whatson/event.asp?id=SX111A-A7822C78

South Street theatre is a local venue putting on lots of up and coming and fantastic work but also it is a simple studio space so go and steal some ideas Drama students.

N.O.N.C.E, Steve Larkin

South Street, Reading:Saturday 23rd November

http://www.readingarts.com/southstreet/whatson/event.asp?id=SX111A-A78227F1

I have no idea about this production so won’t pretend to but think it looks worth a watch for the same reasons as Beats.

Antigone, Sophocles

South Hill Park, Bracknell: 6th November – 9th November

http://www.southhillpark.org.uk/13323/shows/antigone.html

Year 12 drama students, you are studying this now so this is a great chance to see a different interpretation of it. It is also a classic piece of drama, very different to what your experience theatre is so if drama is a passion of yours, this will be a great way to improve your knowledge and broaden your experience.

Othello, William Shakespeare

South Hill Park, Bracknell: Saturday 23rd November

http://www.southhillpark.org.uk/13301/shows/othello.html

I seem to have got into the habit of including a Shakespeare so here is your fix for this month … I have seen things by Icarus before and they tend to have an interesting approach to Shakespeare so should be really exciting.

The Pillowman, Martin McDonaugh

South Hill Park, Bracknell: Saturday 23rd November

http://www.southhillpark.org.uk/13306/shows/the-pillowman.html

If you have done GCSE or A-Level drama at Little Heath you are bound to have worked on this in some way … why not go and see what someone else has done …

Enjoy, Miss Broadhead.

Year twelve Briefing notes for the week beginning 30th September

number12A few things for the week ahead please.

We have a guest speaker for the formal assembly on Tuesday. As such, could you please get there as promptly as possible. Ms Vignali’s assembly on target setting and grades will now be on Tuesday 8th October.

Well done to all of you who have sorted your community service out already. Remember to sign up your choices in the Common Room.

Click here for the September’s apprenticeship newsletter. In particular, have a look at the level four qualifications. These follow on from A Levels, and represent a less expensive route to higher education. They are a growth area of education at the moment, and the Reading area has some excellent opportunities in this field.

Finally there are some free mulit-functional analogue organisers in the Common Room. Help yourself.

Have a good week.

Mr Kydd.

Community Service

volunteerYear Twelve,

Hopefully by now most Year 12 students will have had a good think about what they will do for their community service.  Well done to those who have already signed up and put their community service on the sixth form common room board.

For those who haven’t yet signed up please make sure this is done by Friday 4th October.

Just to remind you

  • Community service is expected to be a minimum of 1 hour a fortnight.
  • It can take place inside of school or something suitable outside.
  • Many subjects welcome yr12 students to support them teach younger year groups.
  • Mr Linz and the SMILE team also would welcome volunteers.
  • This is brilliant to add to your university application or a CV.
  • Last year many students  found it useful to talk about community service  at interview for University or for employment.

Any problems please talk to your mentor or see Mr Hanham or Mrs Fisher.
