ICT Enrichment – employment opportunities in ICT

Gold-ICT1A salary increase in IT job vacancies

Hrrewiew.co.uk reported on a study conducted by the Adzuna, comparing the current employment opportunity rates and salary statistics from the previous year (September 2012 to September 2013). Salaries have seen an increase of 0.6% since August 2013, which is a strong indicator that employers have an increased confidence in the UK economy.

However, as it currently stands, salaries are still down 0.3% from previous years. This equates to the average yearly pay-packet being £1020 less due to devaluation as a consequence of inflation. However, despite salaries being down by 0.3% on average across all market sectors from last year, it seems jobs in IT have actually seen a rise in their salary by 6.9%.

Year Twelve briefing notes for the Week starting Monday 11th November

number12All,

Last week felt like a very busy start to the term. Maybe this is as well, as we are really now in the crucial learning period of your AS year. You should ask yourself if you are averaging the three to four hours a day outside the classroom that we expect, and that you need to undertake to succeed.

A few matters for the week ahead please.

1. Remembrance -Please remember the two minutes silence tomorrow if you are in the Common Room. If you still need to get a poppy  the box is in my office. You might also like to look at the following BBC audio slideshow about a touching tribute the Wilfred Owen.

2. There will be group assemblies this week. You will be texted if you are expected to attend.

3. Friday is non-uniform day. Mr Linz has asked me to pass on the following “we would like you to dress smartly on Friday – and to donate £1. We will have people collecting money at break and lunch in the Common rooms – so there is every opportunity to donate £1!” The cause is excellent.

Work hard – and ask for help when you need it.

Remembrance

poppy-appealA very sincere thank you to all of you who have helped collect money by selling poppies. I will be writing to you formally in the week, but it is much appreciated.

A lot has been said about Fred Potts recently, and I thought you might like to see these two BBC audio slideshows (Part One and Part Two) which explain the scale of what he achieved.  You may know that he holds the very special distinction of being the only person in the history of Reading to be awarded the Victoria Cross following his actions at Gallipoli in August 1915. He was 22 at the time.

He is known as the hero with the shovel because of he used this to transport a wounded man, Arthur Andrews, at the end of two days of hell. His actions risked his own life, and saved Andrews. After the war,  Potts returned to Edgehill Road and became a master taylor.

The Potts VC Memorial Trust site can be found here.

UCAS

ucas-logoYou should by now have finished or be finishing your application.  Make sure that you see your mentor to check that your reference is done, and that they have seen your statement.  Once mentors have done references, I will approve them and send to UCAS once I hace given your application a final check.

If any changes need to be made, your applications will be sent back to you.  You then re-submit using pay/send, but you don’t get charged again.

You should receive an e mail from UCAS confirming that your application has been received.  Universities will respond at different speeds, so be patient if you haven’t heard anything.

Education News

Michael Gove applauding at conferenceThe link below will take you to an article by journalist Polly Toynbee  and is well worth a read.  It’s about the changes to the new English curriculum but also discusses how important subjects like drama are.

This is a picture of Michael Gove, the education secretary, applauding something that he has just said.
