Things looking up for graduate jobs

_77776149_careerwomenThere has been a big fall in graduate unemployment in the UK, the latest figures suggest.

The Higher Education Careers Service Unit (Hecsu) analysed the destinations of 256,350 new graduates six months after they left university.

Some 7.3% were unemployed in January 2014, down from 8.5% in January 2013 and the lowest level since 2008.

The figures are a “fascinating example” of how quickly the graduate jobs market can change, says Hecsu’s Charlie Ball.

University of Reading – Meteorology Work Experience Programme for February 2015

sunThis popular programme is available to students in Years 10 to 13. The work experience gives students a real insight into the field of Meteorology and allows them to use the state of the art facilities based at the University of Reading. The Meteorology Department has close links with the Met Office and students will be given the opportunity to analyse real weather data, develop weather forecasts, use meteorological equipment in the field to collect data, discuss climate change and also visit the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting.

Students will also get an insight into studying Meteorology at the University of Reading.

Year 12 Community Service

It is important to make the best use of your time during year 12 where you can develop new skills and experiences that will set you apart from other candidates for university places or job applications.  We expect all year 12 students to complete at least 1 hour of community service a week either in school or outside of school. Below is a link to a document that will give you some ideas of what the school can offer as well as some ideas for what you can do outside of school.

Year 13 have a student finance roadshow in their common room tomorrow at 1.20.  It is really an informal q and a after a brief presentation from an outside speaker.

Year 13 – please make sure you are seeing your mentors.  If you don’t, they will not be able to write an effective reference.  They need to know what your plans are.

This is a paid duty (£6.80 an hour) and we are keen to attract students who are reliable with a pro-active approach to school life and who are not afraid to challenge students if necessary.  Commitment is absolutely crucial to this role so please only apply if you are a serious candidate.  This work experience will look good on a cv or personal statement, and this role can definitely help with students’ personal development and communication skills
