Art Galleries and Websites
There really is no better way to view art than first hand, and so I have put together a list of some of our most local galleries, and their websites, that may be of interest to you. This is by no means complete, but the ones listed will cover most areas of art and design. Whilst most of the major galleries are in London, many interesting creative arts events do occur more locally and I will use this website to inform you when they happen.
The Tate and National Galleries in London are free to enter, but they do have special exhibitions in some rooms that there is a charge to see. You should check the websites for up to date information on this.
There follows a very brief summary of the kind of work on display:
For an interesting mix of modern/contemporary (or current) work with the more traditional styles visit Tate Britain. For solely modern and contemporary art visit Tate Modern. For all things fashion and design based you should consider the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A). The National Portrait Gallery contains portraits in a variety of forms dating from Tudor times to the present day. For a broader range of genres you could visit The National Gallery. The Royal Academy which hosts the famous Summer Exhibition is also well worth a look. The Ashmolean Museum of Art and Architecture in Oxford is an excellent resource which is a little more local, and again has regular exhibitions that may be of interest to you. For example this summer they have a major exhibition of ‘Old Master’ drawings from the likes of Michelangelo, Raphael, Rubens and Turner.
Reading Museum often has interesting exhibitions of art and photography, and houses a small collection of ancient art as well. If you have a specific interest in ancient art, then The British Museum is also a great place to look.
If you are looking for contemporary UK based art, there is the exciting Signal Gallery in London, which has an excellent website that showcases the many varied and exciting styles of art they display. This group of artists are also linked to Red Propeller, and are well worthy of a look.
Finally, Time Out lists the current creative arts events in London. It is a really good way to keep up to date with what’s happening in the world of art and design in the capital, should you be planning a trip this summer.
If you discover any interesting exhibitions or events in our local area, please let me know so we can share them through this website.
Happy viewing.
Mr Viner.
