Cooking Competition !

confused-character

Thursday 12th February from 3.45pm – 5.45pm we are looking for pairs of students to work together to cook a 2 course meal costing under £8 from locally produced and seasonal foods.

A local chef and business person will judge the entries and the winning team will be invited to the Honesty UK Cookery School to work alongside Chef Romilla Arber to produce a celebration reception.

This is a fantastic opportunity , taking part alone will look fantastic on a CV and one team will definitely be selected from LHS to work alongside Chef Romilla Arber.  If you are interested please go to  A13 on Monday 2nd February at lunch time for more information from Ms Hastings.

Many thanks Eileen Wooller

Sutton Trust Summer Schools

sutton trustApplications for the 2015 Sutton Trust Summer Schools are now open.

The Sutton Trust Summer Schools are free, subject-specific residential courses for Year 12 students from UK state-maintained schools. The summer schools allow bright students from non-privileged homes a taste of life at a leading university and to gain an insight into what it is like to live and study as a first-year undergraduate student. The summer schools balance busy academic days with enjoyable social activities, as well as provide attendees with the opportunity to meet current staff and students.

The aim is to demystify elite universities and to equip students – most of whom will be the first in their families to go on to higher education – with the knowledge and insight to make high quality applications to top universities.

Visit the dedicated UK Summer School website here.

PPEs and graduate salaries and re-sits and UCAS

examsPlease make sure you turn up on time for your exams.  It is disruptive to others and unfair if you delay the start or turn up when others have started and are trying to concentrate.

You should have returned your re-sit forms on Monday.  If you haven’t there are later entry fees which means the longer you leave it, the higher the price.

UCAS deadline is Thursday at 6.00pm.  You should now be thinking about your student finance application – follow this link https://www.gov.uk/student-finance

You need to get this in by May if you want your fees/grant for the start of your course.

Also, if you’ve had all your offers or you are sure where you want to go (you can reject places that you are still waiting on) you should make your firm and insurance choice.  This should trigger them sending you stuff about accommodation.  Apply early for the best halls.

Good news on the graduate salaries front – they are higher and more jobs are out there.  The headline figures are a little misleading, but the median salary for the TOP 100 COMPANIES is now £30,000.  Aldi will have to sift through a massive application avalanche with their £41,000 starting salary.  Public sector starting salaries are more like £16,000 (nice to see society has got its priorities right – who needs teachers and nurses when you can buy cheap champagne!) with the average across all graduate jobs being mid £20,000s.  As ever, it depends where you work and who for.  Salaries are higher in London and the SE.

Here’s an article about it http://www.theguardian.com/money/shortcuts/2015/jan/12/aldi-graduates-starting-salary-pay-off-student-loan
